Talent Assessment Platform, Kira Academic, Unveils New Methodology to Help Schools Find Exceptional Students

Kira Academic releases a combination of new features to ensure all students are assessed in a fair and objective manner, eliminating admissions bias.

Toronto, ON (July 7th, 2015) - Kira Talent, creators of the first video talent assessment platform for universities and colleges, Kira Academic, today announces its expanded platform to improve the higher education admissions process with the Kira Methodology. Now included with the Kira Academic video service, the Kira Methodology is comprised of two major features: Competency-based Assessments and a Rubrics rating system. The features work together to help admissions teams define the attributes most important to their programs and design the application to accurately identify students that possess them.

“Many schools have a major issue when it comes to the admissions process – they don’t know what they’re looking for in applicants. Transcripts and test scores measure cognitive abilities, but we know great students are more than just test scores ,” said Craig Morantz, CEO of Kira Talent. “Every program is unique and they’re all looking for applicants with particular strengths. We wanted these traits to be a crucial part of every decision so admissions teams make the right selection when it comes to program fit.”

Using Competencies, schools review successful students in their cohort and identify which traits are most important and valued for their program. By selecting the competencies most important to the program and then crafting questions around them, admissions teams can better predict the fit and future success of their applicants.

Once competencies are determined and questions are selected, admissions teams assess applicants using the new Rubrics rating system, which ensures they are assessed in a fair and objective manner. Each question is related to a specific competency, like leadership or verbal communication, and each receives an individual three-point scale rating. After evaluating an application, the scores add up to create a Competency Fit Score. Rubric allows all reviewing to be objective based on the predetermined competencies and cohort vision for the program, and helps to remove bias from the selection process.

“The Kira Methodology is innovative and personalized. The team does an excellent job helping us identify the core competencies for our program, which allows us to assess applicants more efficiently,” said Danielle Curtis Dailey, Director of Enrollment Management at Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. “With the process we feel confident that each student we select is the right fit for our program and has been admitted without any biases.”
